About Me

I have always been fascinated with words. As a little girl, I fiddled with rhyme and poetry. I wrote limericks, jingles and all sorts of doggerel. Nothing very serious, I can assure you! I still love puns and jokes that play on words...to the despair of my family and friends. But I can't say I ever thought of myself as a writer.

Then I began to teach first grade and fell in love with children's literature. As I read to the boys and girls, I watched their faces when we shared a favorite story. I learned about the kind of books they enjoyed. After a time, I began to make books for my class and create stories with them. Sometimes our books connected with the curriculum; sometimes they were just for fun. I loved doing this and only then did I begin to think of myself as an author.

Now I am lucky enough to do two things I really enjoy. I have time to write, which is very satisfying, and I still keep in touch with children through author visits, which is a pleasure. It's the best of both worlds.

Sometimes I am asked where I get my ideas for stories. I suppose they come from real life experiences or things I find interesting. Most of what I write has a touch of nonfiction woven into it. I learned a great deal about honeybees and wrote a story about them because I am married to The Beeman! Both my husband and I love to travel, so We All Went on Safari , We're Sailing to Galapagos, We're Riding on a Caravan, Off We Go to Mexico and We're Sailing Down the Nile grew out of our trips to fascinating faraway places. We lived in a pre-Revolutionary farmhouse. I enjoy the history of the period, so researching and writing the Colonial series was a natural.

We lived for some time in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Our four children, a son Bill, a daughter Margee, and twin daughters Beth and Ginger, were raised there. They are now grown and have moved away. And so have we for now we live in Williamsburg, Virginia. We have five grandchildren, all boys, each of whom I enjoy immensely and none of whom live quite close enough to suit me.

Now that you know something about me, I hope you will tell me something about you. Please drop me a note at laurie@lauriekrebs.com. I will do my best to answer you.
